In my 15 years in this business, I have seen that of all the component parts that make up an app project, it is the marketing that mystifies founders the most. This is because, while there are challenges in validating, designing and engineering an app, those challenges are relatively predictable and playbooks exist for overcoming them. In the meantime, marketing seems to many founders to be the one area where their app project could simply ‘sink or swim’. Well, I am here to say that this is not the case.
Let me put it bluntly: if you are feeling like marketing is a big unknown, then you are not doing it right!
It should not be a case of “let’s create it and then see how the market responds”. This is akin to throwing paint on the wall and seeing what sticks. Instead, by the time you launch, you should already have a sizable number of potential users hungry to put your app to work to make their lives better. So on launch day, instead of hoping for traction from expensive billboards and praying for better responese rates on Instagram ads, you will have an engaged community to lean on and get the word out. We want to cut through the noise of modern media, not add to it. We want to build relationships with early adopters, power users and superfans before we launch. We want to speak to individuals by name, not shout at the crowd!
